The UFC has released UFC legends, Junior Dos Santos, and Alistair Overeem from the promotion. Whilst ‘Cigano’ was a former UFC heavyweight champion, the dream of capturing UFC gold for the former K-1 Grand Prix, DREAM, Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Overeem, didn’t materialize.
The two legends were on a skid in their fighting career. The 37-year-old, Dos Santos, left the promotion after suffering 4 back-to-back TKO losses to Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Ciryl Gane respectively. The Brazilian’s last win inside the octagon was against Derrick Lewis in 2019.

‘The Demolition Man‘ had won 3 out of his last 5. But, he was finished in his last bout against Alexander Volkov as his 2-fight winning streak against Walt Harris and Augusto Sakai got snapped. The 40-year-old Dutch veteran left the promotion with 9 finishes under his belt since his debut against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141.
Overeem fought for the belt at UFC 203 but came up short against Stipe Miocic. He was looking to make another run at the prize that has eluded him in his illustrious professional career. Unfortunately, he will not be able to realize his dream.

Dos Santos made his UFC debut in 2008 as he finished Fabricio Werdum. He captured the UFC gold when he defeated Cain Velasquez in 2011. His trilogy against Velasquez ranks among the best rivalries ever in MMA and the UFC.
‘Cigano’ holds notable wins over the likes of Miocic, Velasquez, Derrick Lewis, Mark Hunt, Frank Mir, and more. Brock Lesnar, Fabricio Werdum, Frank Mir, Mark Hunt, Dos Santos are some of Overeem’s notable victims inside the Octagon.
Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem: What’s in the future for the legends?
It remains to be seen whether the veterans will look to continue fighting. If they do decide to carry on, there won’t be any shortage of takers. Bellator MMA seems to be a feasible option. Also, PFL MMA will welcome them with open hands. Former UFC champion, Fabricio Werdum, recently joined the heavyweight division there.
‘The Demolition Man’ could return to Asia and sign with ONE Championship as well. This is a path treaded by former UFC fighters like Sage Northcutt and Demetrious Johnson.
There are many organizations for the legends if they want to continue in the sport. However, it’s saddening for the UFC fans to see them leave as it marks the end of a golden era at the heavyweight division.
What’s next for Overeem and Dos Santos? Let us know.
